  19.     Actually, I remember reading shortly before the 2500 came along that CBM had
  20. officially announced the 2500UX, which was basically to be a 2500 with 5 megs
  21. of memory, a larger HD, and a tape drive.  I know the 2500's have been in
  22. developer's hands for a while.  I think the major delay is inthe fact that CBM
  23. decided to change the hardware to a 2000 with a 25MHz 030 board, and there was
  24. a lot of retesting & redesigning to do.
  25. Sorry if this message came out a little garbled.... I'm not doing a full
  26. vt-100 emulation here & it makes editing a little exciting...

  47. I stand corrected, as far as Commodore promising Unix for years now.  It's
  48. too bad every Amiga magazine has to talk about it for years now, but that
  49. rumors and announcements are not synonymous.

  51. While it's nice to see Atari and Commodore making Unix available on their
  52. 32 bit machines, I think it's equally important that these guys are able
  53. to support their products in earnest.  Considering how long it has taken
  54. Atari, for example, to make an OS upgrade available to its users, I'm not
  55. sure that their version of Unix will be that much better supported.

  86.         I have obtained a copy of the sources of GNU C++ but I don't know how
  87. to make an executable for C++.  Do I bring the source to my ST and make it
  88. right there.  README says that I need to have either as from SUN or gas (GNU
  89. assembler).  Does this mean that I have to get gas also?
  90.         Your help is appreciated.

  110. John Bear, in his delightful book "Computer Wimp", he lists "166
  111. things I wish I had known before I bought my first computer".

  113. Point number 25 says to choose the software before you buy the hardware.

  115. I think he is absolutely right, and his advice helped me to buy the
  116. Atari I now have.  I got what I wanted, APL.68000, and am still happy
  117. with it; it is the highest level programming language I know for
  118. any micro, and is almost the fastest implementation of any APL for
  119. any micro.  Of course, I have been delighted to see certain other
  120. good things come along...  for instance, UNITERM, Gulam, and Maple,
  121. but the point is still the same:

  185. I was wondering if i should post a message asking if PMFS even works.
  186. I have tried the posted version on my 286 to a 520 and all the atari
  187. side just locks up. With DEBUG defined i see that pmfsu is getting
  188. checksum errors and re-trying. With the most recently posted version,
  189. it gets a checksum, and then does not re-try. I have sent mail to
  190. the author, but have not received a response. Has anyone been able to
  191. get PMFS to work between a 286 with SCO Xenix and a ST? I tried can
  192. do Zmodem at 19.2K, but i brought the baud down to 4800 with the same
  193. results. I think that the 286 side is creating a P.disk with bytes
  194. that are swapped as far as the atari end is concerned.

  228.      What he's talking about is the Enhanced Chip Set for the Amiga. ALL
  229. Amiga systems will be able to use them - the A1000 will require a special
  230. daughterboard (third party). They provide several new video modes, including
  231. high-resolution (704*480 with overscan) non-interlaced, 1280*480 SuperHires,
  232. ChromaKey (the thing that lets weathermen walk in front of their weathermaps),
  233. and some other new features. All high-res modes on the current chip set
  234. are interlaced, for compatibility with NTSC and PAL video systems - one
  235. of the original design goals of the Amiga. However, this can cause a
  236. problematic amount of flicker if you don't buy a de-interlacing or high-

  241.      Commodore-Amiga will not give information on the release date of the
  242. A3000. Some specifications are known; 68030, 68881 at 33 Mhz (I think);
  243. ECS; full 32-bit system path up and down the line. Observers guess at
  244. release dates from 1Q90 (don't bet on it) to 4Q90 (safe bet, IMHO.)

  247.      With all due respect, I think it is a safe bet that C-A support
  248. is better than Atari, Inc. support. I suggest you verify this on your
  249. own, of course, but as a benchmark; AmigaDOS 1.3 came out a few months
  250. ago. It came with a 1/3 inch thick supplemental manual detailing all
  251. changes and additions made to all commands.
  252.      I got my copy from a dealer for $15.
  253.      They just released a maintenance upgrade - 1.3.2 - for free.
  254.      You may also wish to compare co-operation with developers, telephone
  255. waits on customer support lines, advertising support, and so on.
  256.      This isn't to say that C-A support is perfect; far from it. But you
  257. can always tell that they're trying very hard.

  260.      Multiple graphics cards, GenLock card, processor upgrade, RAM additions,
  261. new and different networking cards and disk interfaces, second (third, etc)

  286.    Well, AD/DA cards, interrupt cards (for process control), parallel output
  287. cards, co-processors (i.e. high-speed DSP's, _Transputers_, an 80386 machine
  288. for doing DOS if you must), and probably some I can't think about.

  346. "desktop" model....
  347. Apparently, the tower comes with more memory than the desktop, and maybe
